Drinking games have been with us as long as man has been consuming old, wet alcoholic grains. They have become a way to pass the time in fun, with a group of friends, over a pint of ale. While Buttons of Widgetaria : Warwards of Wappenshaw was not designed as a drinking game, there have been rumors of it being used as such, so we thought we would put down a few of the rules being passed from mouth to ear in the Wards of the Realm.
ALWAYS: Drink responsibly. If you are at the pub, your designated driver will have a role to play during the Wappenshaw.
- Players: Any number of players can play as long as the game moves along at a comfortable pace. This is not a game that can be rushed, so just sit back and have fun!
- Button Master: Each drinking player takes a turn as the button master. This is the person who will actually choose the mission and push teh button.
- Keeper of Wappenshaw: Any designated drivers may be designated as Keepers of Wappenshaw. They will take charge any time there is a Wappenshaw.
- The Game: Warwards of Wappenshaw may be played on any number of devices from cell phones to desktop computers. In group play, it is probably best played on a tablet or cell phone that can be passed from player to player. One or more players, in addition to the Button Master, should be able to see the screen when the button master pushes the button. The view port consists of one or more game buttons, and a status panel that displays points and battle status.
- Points: Points are generally disregarded in group play, but players may come up with additional rules that apply at different point levels.
- Battle Status: This is where the game is focused. There are three possible outcomes in any battle. Victory, Defeat and Wappenshaw.
- Victory: If Victory is declared, the Button Master selects another player to take a drink.
- Defeat: If the garrison is shamed in defeat, the Button Master must take a drink to console himself.
- Wappenshaw: Wappenshaw is a key element in group play, especially when played as a drinking game. If battle is waged and Wappenshaw is declared in the battle status, the Keepers of Wappenshaw must, check to be sure all players are properly provisioned with water to drink, snacks, appetizers or other food to eat and that all are in good condition to continue the game. Once the Keepers are satisfied with the provisioning and condition of Button Masters, everyone cries out a hearty toast to “Warwards of Wappenshaw” and takes a drink.
- Duration/Winner: The game play can continue as long as the Keepers of Wappenshaw are satisfied that it is a good idea to keep playing. If played properly, everyone wins!
